Bacalar, Pueblo Magico Near Cancun
Bacalar, with its rich Mayan history was included on Mexico’s Pueblo Magico list in 2006. Being one of Central America’s major trading points, it was subject to looting by pirates for many years during the golden age of pirates in the sixteenth century, divesting it of its riches and resources but leaving it with an intriguing history. The construction of San Felipe Port in 1729 came about as a way to protect itself against these lawless criminals and a statuesque fortress was built. It was then used in the various battles against invading European forces, serving as a watch tower against advancing intruders. Nowadays, Bacalar’s fort is a tourist attraction in its own right.
